ARC Review: Three Dirty Secrets by Nikki Sloane

I absolutely love this series! Nikki Sloane writes some of the hottest books I have ever read, and I have loved each book in the Blindfold Club series. Three Dirty Secrets is the fourth book in the series, but each can be read as a standalone since they are about interconnected characters. Regan and Silas were great, and I really enjoyed their story.

Working at the blindfold club Regan sells sex for money, though her body isn't for sale. When she catches her boyfriend with another woman and he tells her that she is cold and detached, she is ready to change that. Needing to do something, Regan decides to let go of her fears and get a tattoo despite her fear of needles to cover up a painful memory. What she doesn't expect is the sexy artist who will be giving her the tattoo. The connection between her and Silas is instant, and hotter than anything she felt with her ex. But being with him threatens everything that she has been working for, and Regan has secrets that she can't have revealed. After being hurt in the past by a liar, Silas doesn't put up with anything but honesty. So what happens when the truth about Regan's secrets finally comes out?

I really loved Regan and Silas. These two were perfect for one another. Silas was sweet and sexy, and I couldn't get enough of him. He was great with Regan, and really helped her with a lot of what she was going through. He had a way of getting her to open up and talk about things that she really needed to, and I liked seeing her grow and heal with his help. Regan was strong, but she had some issues because of her past. Seeing her really embrace her desires and find someone that she could share that with was something that I really enjoyed. Her ex might have thought that she was cold, but it was clear right from the start that they weren't compatible. She needed someone who could give and take, and Silas was exactly that guy for her. He allowed her to explore her dominant side, while also taking control when he needed to as well. These two were so steamy together, and I couldn't get enough of them.

Overall, another great book in this series. I really enjoyed the story and Silas and Regan are definitely one of my favorite couples. It was so good to see familiar faces here, and I always love getting to catch up with my favorite characters. I don't know how Nikki Sloan does it, but just when I think she has written my favorite couple she goes and gives us another couple that is just as fantastic as the previous ones. If you are a fan of erotic romance with great writing and a ton of steam, this series is an absolute must read! I can't wait to get more from Nikki Sloane and I can't recommend these books enough.

ARC Review: My Sweet Demise by Shana Vanterpool

My Sweet Demise is Shana Vanterpool's debut novel and the first book in her Demise series. This book is a standalone, with the next book featuring a different couple of interconnected characters. Taking a chance on an author's debut novel is always a bit of a risk, but the blurb here was one I just couldn't pass up. While I had a lot of issues with this story, I had to finish it to see how things would turn out.

When her roommate kicks her out, Raina needs a place to stay and quick. Each apartment available goes from bad to worse until she finally shows up at one with the hottest guy she has ever seen. Needing a place and having no other options, she agrees to be Kent Nicholson's roommate and wing woman in order to secure the room. But he is far worse than she first suspects. Though she knows she should stay away, the attraction between them is impossible to ignore. Though their connection is undeniable, each of them have trust issues that stand in their way of moving forward. But can they try together, or will they end in disaster?

I had moments where I genuinely liked both Raina and Kent. But for the most part, these two were so hard for me to feel anything for. Kent is an absolute jerk. Though he had brief moments where he wasn't, it was the entire book. I figured at some point he would get over that, but honestly he as Raina called him many times a pig. He has no issue using women and "punishing" them for something that someone did to him in the past. I just couldn't get over some of that, and this guy with his constant bagging of whores on his couch was just too much. (and yes that is how he talks and refers to the many girls he sleeps with) Raina was whiny and irritating for pretty much the entire story. She complained constantly and just grated on my nerves. While these two did have steam and a connection, they were just so hard to really feel invested in. Their relationship was all over the place and they both seemed bi-polar. One minute things were fine and the next they were at each other's throats and fighting for the dumbest reasons. I honestly didn't understand why they were fighting the majority of the time as it was the dumbest stuff possible. Everything was over the top and blown out of proportion.

I also really hated Raina's sister. While at first she comes off as someone who is protective and just looking out for her family, she just got worse as the story went on. She was beyond protective and seemed downright controlling and judgmental. She was far too bitchy to like, and I couldn't believe the things she said and did in regards to Raina's life and to Raina herself. I absolutely loved Raina and Kent's other roommate James. He was sweet and adorable and I was so excited to see at the end of this book that his story is next. While I had problems with this book, I really loved him. But as much as I was excited to get his story next, I am also dreading it as the heroine is none other than Raina's sister Becca. I know I will end up reading it for my love of James, but I just hope that there is some redeeming Becca after how absolutely awful she was here. As much as I wanted to love this one, it just didn't work for me. While I couldn't put it down and had to finish, it was more that I couldn't look away as the accident was happening rather than I was truly enjoying this story. I think the potential was there, but unfortunately there were just too many problems here for me.

ARC Review: Mercury Striking by Rebecca Zanetti

Mercury Striking was fast paced from page one, and it had me wanting to know more and more. Gosh it left me with that feeling so bad I want the next one, now! It is set in Los Angeles six months after a bacteria infected the US (maybe the whole world). This bacteria has three possibilities with anyone it infects that survives. 1. You might come out with some enhanced abilities as long as you stay up on vitamin injections. 2. You become a crazy person who just wants to bite people and eat them (zombie like but they're not dead). 3. You become a highly intelligent serial killer.

Lynne Harmony is on the run, and seeks help from a known community leader/soldier, Jax Mercury. She shows him and his scouting team her blue heart (which is a side effect of the only known cure for the bacteria). Everyone wants their hands on her for either her blood to find a cure, to trade her for supplies, or kill her because they think she is carrying a new form of the disease. Jax sees her value and takes her to his base pretty much as a hostage.

Both Jax an Lynne have learned a lot in this new world, and don't share their secrets all at once. Neither can risk the vulnerability or time a romantic relationship comes with. However, they are both almost instantly attracted to one another. It's a terrible situation where love might either be the worst thing imaginable or their only link to their humanity.

There are several intense intimate scenes so take note of that. You won't find fancy restaurants and candle light in this story but the intense environment brings along some strong protective thoughts, feelings, and actions that will make you swoon. I'm excited for the next book, to find out what happens next. This was the first book for me by Rebecca Zanetti and I am very interested now in her other books!

Slowly, like prey, she rolled over to face Jax Mercury, bare chested, cascading heat. A jagged tattoo made up of complicated lines and sharp edges wound over his left shoulder. She could make out a 20 in the center, covered and crossed over by lines. A special ops tat with a 44 in it shifted in the muscle on his left arm. A military designation of some type? “You promised,” she whispered.

He opened one brown eye. “I’m not attacking you, am I?”

“Well, no.” She inhaled, trying to slow her heart rate before a panic attack swamped her. She eyed him, tousled and relaxed. His right bicep held a tattoo with sharp lines, a shield, and the word Vanguard written through a heart. A dark lock of hair had fallen over his forehead, and a bristly shadow covered his square jaw, giving him the look of a lazy panther.

Panthers didn’t really get lazy, now did they?

He sighed and reached for the comforter, frowning when she flinched. Sighing, he pulled up the threadbare fabric to her neck, covering her completely.

“I need to know what I’m dealin’ with here, darlin’,” he rumbled, opening both eyes and focusing on her.

She curled her knees up toward her chest, hitting his hip bone on the way. “What do you mean?”

His gaze roamed her face, lingered on her lips, and returned to her eyes. “The world turned shitty-times-ten for women without the ability to fight.”

She blinked. “I know.” Predators always found the weak.

“What really happened when you disappeared from the CDC? Kidnapping or escape?” he asked.

Apparently the questioning would begin in bed. She tried to move back, but the wall stopped her. “I’d rather discuss this later while clothed.”

“That’s unfortunate, because we’re discussing it now.” His tone remained gentle.

She’d have to crawl over him to get to the floor, and no way was she getting in a tussle in bed with him. “I escaped.”

“Three months ago.”

“Yes.” She plucked at a string on the comforter. “The contagion spread, and soon the people in control weren’t the people who should be in control. I ran.”

He nodded. “Right about that time, the news stopped.”

So many people had succumbed to the illness, the world had seemed to stop. “I know.”

“Where have you been for three months?”

She tightened her jaw to keep her lips from trembling.

“Before the Internet crashed, the battles in L.A. were broadcast continually. I saw you fight, and I later read about the group you’ve formed here. Even the worst of the worst know not to come within five miles of inner Los Angeles, or they face the wrath of Jax Mercury.”

He lifted one dark eyebrow. “Those reports were exaggerated.”

“Of course.” She rubbed sleep from her eyes, her heart rate finally slowing. “The remaining doctors at the CDC tried to contain me, but I got loose. I knew I needed to get here, that with your vitamin B stores and fighting troops, maybe I could be safe and help find a cure.” That wasn’t the whole story. But she couldn’t trust him with it yet.

“Did you meet trouble on the way?”

“Of course.” There was always trouble, and she’d seen too much. “But I made it here.”

He touched her cheek. “Did anybody hurt you?”

She frowned. Oh. “No. I traveled with my uncle Bruce, who was a hell of a cop in his day. He helped me to break out of the CDC—the center we created in the nation’s capital the second Scorpius got out of hand.”

“Wasn’t the CDC branch in DC just policy oriented?”

“Yes, but we took over a hospital and started researching there, and once I was better, I worked there. It was supposed to be temporary, but as you know, everything happened so quickly, so we never returned to the main CDC hospital in Atlanta.”

Her uncle Bruce had visited her many times in the hospital, and when it became evident that several of the CDC doctors had been infected and were considering making Lynne a prisoner, he’d come up with a plan to get her out. “He posed as a lab technician to get me out of the facility, and then he had an elaborate scheme that included three stairwells, one secured lab, and finally a row of windows.” She smiled and then faltered. “We’d been on the run for months, and he’d taken great pains to protect me. He died a month ago.” The pain was fresh and almost doubled her over. She’d lost so many family members and friends, as had any survivor. God, it hurt.

“I’m sorry.” Jax ran a knuckle across her chin. “Scorpius?” It’d be easy to just nod and lie. “No. Bruce was killed by one of the groups seeking me. Many people still are hunting me, believing I either started the apocalypse on purpose or I have knowledge about a cure.”

She had knowledge about Myriad but no cure. “After my uncle’s death, I continued my search for you and safety, meeting stragglers on the way and staying away from most encampments. Foraged for food when I could.” Of course they were hunting her now. It was amazing she’d survived, considering she could trip over a smooth floor, she was such a klutz.

Her former lack of grace was the least of her worries. At some point, she’d need to tell Mercury everything, especially if he wouldn’t let her out of the room. But not now, and definitely not while in such a vulnerable position. “I haven’t been attacked, Jax.”

“Good.” His smile seemed almost sinful. “Then you can relax here in our bed and not flinch when I pull up the covers.”

Heat flared through her. Our bed? “Oh, hell no. I’m not sharing a bed with you.”

He glanced at her, at the bed, down at his chest, and then back at her. “I believe you are.”

She shoved him. “Absolutely not.” When he didn’t move or respond, she coughed out air. “Why? Why would you want to share a bed?”

He sighed. “It’s not personal. You’re a danger to people, and some of them might be a danger to you. So you stay with me, under guard, where I can protect everybody.” He pointed to the stacked locks on the door, which she’d failed to study the day before. The door was metal, huge, and obviously not native to the building. “There are locks on both sides, and I have all the keys. One of us could take the couch, but frankly, it sucks.”

What should’ve been the worst come-on she’d ever heard actually sounded like the truth. It was a pretty cage, but a cage nonetheless. She needed freedom. “I want my own place.”

“You’re not safe, and I can’t have guards on you twenty-four
seven. Sometimes it’s just me, and I need sleep. So you sleep when I sleep, and everybody stays safe. Period.” He stretched an arm above his head, showing that amazingly cut chest. “Like I said, I won’t force you. You want the couch? It’s yours.”

She eyed the cold-looking, rather worn pleather. It was a freakin’ luxury compared to sleeping on the hard ground, but even so, now she’d had a taste of a real bed again . . . “A gentleman would give me the bed.”

He scratched the stubble next to his scar. “All the gentlemen are dead, baby. Soldiers and survivors are what we have now.”

She pushed up to one elbow, discreetly eyeing the locks on the door before studying him. “How dangerous is it here for me?”

“Very.” His eyes darkened from bourbon to Guinness. “We have many who haven’t been infected, and you are a carrier.”

“Anybody who survived the fever is a carrier.”

“As you know, there are rumors that you carry a new strain of the disease.”

More lies meant to force her away from other people. “We already discussed that. Either you believe me or you don’t,” she whispered.

His expression didn’t gentle. “There are so many rumors and ghost stories out there; I don’t pay attention to them.”

She swallowed, her throat clogging. “Good. There is no new strain of the bacterial infection. I’m no different from anybody else who’s survived Scorpius.”

“You’re the only one with a blue heart.”

“I know. I was infected with the main strain, and then we used one of the many experiments to save my life, turning my heart blue. We were never able to duplicate the exact concoction again, although since it didn’t cure me, I’m not sure it matters.”

“You’re different. How can it not matter?”

She sighed. “My heart is blue, as are a few veins around it. I have both photosphores and chromatophores in my heart, which without the initial bacterial infection would be impossible. Squids and octopi have the same materials, essentially, and they can turn different colors—usually blue.”

“So you have squid genes?” His brows furrowed, and his gaze pierced her.

She snorted. “Not exactly, but close enough.”

ARC Review: Boiling Point by Tessa Bailey

Tessa Bailey is one of the most reliable authors I know. If you are in to sexy, brooding, bossy, alpha male heroes with super dirty mouths, you have to pick up some Tessa Bailey books.

This book is the fourth (I think) book in the Crossing The Line series. I read one other book in the series and while I plan to read the others, you are free to read these in any order you want. In the book you are introduced to a group of questionable characters with questionable past who are part of an underground, undercover police operation. All of the characters use their connections to their sketchy past to assist the police in taking down people doing things similar to what they may have done in the past.

Polly is on the task force because she is a hacker who got caught. Austin is on the task force because he was a renowned con artist who got caught. While on the task force Polly is on her own sub-mission to take down a con artist who destroyed her family. Austin happens to have a connection to that con-artist and makes a deal to help Polly with her mission. Right from the beginning there is an intense connection between Austin and Polly. It plays out as hostility but underneath the barbs, there is real sexual tension. In her quest to accomplish her mission of taking down the man who destroyed her family, Polly finds herself in a number of dangerous situations but Austin is always there protecting her, even when she doesn't realize it.

I really liked how this book was about not hiding and about how true love recognizes the truth even when it's in disguise. I loved it that Polly was the perfect mix of strength and vulnerability. I even enjoyed the fact that Austin made mistakes left and right. Polly was really Austin's first attempt at authentic intimacy. As bad as he wanted Polly he was plagued by insecurities about the things he had done in the past and whether he was good enough for Polly. I liked that, it made Austin more real to me. The other thing I was happy to see in this book was the supporting cast of characters. I had read the story of one of the other couples and had been introduced to another member of the group in another book. I thought the interactions between the supporting characters added to the story.

There were only two things about this book that I did not love. The first might contain a spoiler so I won't go into too much detail. All I will tell you is that there is a reason that Austin is in Chicago and the way he handled that reason really didn't sit well with me. I thought something would change by the end of the book but it didn't. The story ends and just nothing. That did not leave a good impression on me. The second issue is less significant and more nit picky. I like a lot of intensity in my character relationships but at a certain point things with Austin and Polly were like super duper intense out of just no where. It's like one second they hate each other and the next they can't take a breath without the other person. The language towards the end was just really dramatic and kept making me roll my eyes.

Beyond my two minor criticisms, I have to say that Tessa Bailey delivers all the time and she does it again with this book. This is definitely on my recommended reading list.

Feature and Giveaway: I Wish You Were Mine by Lauren Layne

Perfect for fans of Alice Clayton and Emma Chase, Lauren Layne’s Oxford series heats up in this story of forbidden desire as a brooding jock hoping for a comeback falls for a woman who’s strictly off-limits.

A year ago, Jackson Burke was married to the love of his life and playing quarterback for the Texas Redhawks. Now he’s retired, courtesy of the car accident that ruined his career—and single, after a nasty scandal torpedoed his marriage. Just as he’s starting to get used to his new life as a health and fitness columnist for Oxford magazine, his unpredictable ex shows up on his doorstep in Manhattan. Jackson should be thrilled. But he can’t stop thinking about the one person who’s always been there for him, the one girl he could never have: her younger sister.

Mollie Carrington can’t say no to Madison. After all, her older sister practically raised her. So when Madison begs for help in winning her ex-husband back, Mollie’s just glad she got over her own crush on Jackson ages ago—or so she thought. Because as Mollie reconnects with Jackson, she quickly forgets all her reasons to stay loyal to her sister. Tempted by Jackson’s mellow drawl and cowboy good looks, Mollie is sick and tired of coming in second place. But she can’t win if she doesn’t play the game.

Check out the Oxford series:

“You seriously didn’t have to hire movers,” Mollie said for the hundredth time as she watched two burly dudes easily maneuver yet another stack of boxes to Jackson’s guest room.

Jackson pointed at a barstool. “Sit. Relax. Want a beer?”

“No, I still need to unpack,” she muttered, reluctantly plopping onto the stool.

“Have a beer, Molls. Unpacking your nightstand contents isn’t like operating heavy machinery,” he said, going to the fridge and pulling out two beers.

“Clearly you don’t know what’s in my nightstand.”

Jackson lifted his eyebrows. “Exactly how big is your vibrator?”

“I meant I have like a zillion books.”

“Which are not breakable,” he said, handing her a beer. “And is that a no on the vibrator?”

She gave him a look as she took the bottle from his hand. “I just want to state for the record that I have moved several times, on my own, without the help of movers, and I could have done it again.”

“Moving yourself is for college kids. You’re an adult. Hire movers.”

“No, moving yourself is for people without extra income,” she said. “Snob.”

“So what was the plan?” he asked, tipping the bottle to his lips. “You were just going to maneuver all those big-ass boxes around with those skinny sticks you call arms?”

“Don’t be silly. I was going to hire some big beefy dudes from campus to help me. Perk of working at a university.”

Jackson was about to set his bottle on the counter but his hand froze, just for a second, and Mollie felt a sting of regret as she realized she’d inadvertently hit a nerve. Not so long ago, Jackson Burke had been absolutely the type of muscled guy friend who’d’ve been really helpful to have around on moving day. Her eyes flitted to his shoulder. Now he was the guy who wouldn’t be doing any heavy lifting for a long time. Maybe ever.

She looked away, her brain scrambling to come up with a quick subject change.

Only maybe that wasn’t what he needed—for people to dance around his injury like it was the elephant in the room. Physically, he was on the road to recovery. He needed to get there mentally as well.

“You said the other night that it didn’t hurt,” she said. “Was that a big macho man moment?”

He stared at the counter. “I’ve told you. It’s fine.”

She rolled her eyes. “Please. Be a little more vague and manly.”

“Well, what do you want me to say, Molls?” he ground out. “That the pain wakes me up at night? That any motion more vigorous than brushing my teeth hurts like hell?”

“Are you going to physical therapy?” she asked, purposely ignoring the wounded-bear routine. That might scare off other people, but she was made of stronger stuff. Knew him better.

He looked away.

“Oh, Jackson.”

He shrugged. “What does it even matter? All the PT in the world isn’t going to help me play football again.”

“Well, gosh,” she said dramatically, “you may as well be dead.”

Jackson was in the process of taking a sip of beer and choked. “Jesus. You are such a smart-ass.”

“I’m just saying, you have a lot going for you,” she said, gentling her tone. “You don’t need a football in your hand or to help a girl move to be an amazing guy.”

“Yeah?” he said as he leaned on his forearms across the counter. “Want to tell me more about how I’m an amazing guy?”

If I did, I might never stop.

ARC Review: Full Domain by Kindle Alexander

Full Domain is the third and final book in the Nice Guys series from Kindle Alexander. I am sad to see it end as I have really enjoyed reading these books and getting to know these characters. The one thing I love is that Kindle has a way of giving us glimpses of characters in other books though, so hopefully this won't be the last we see of all these guys. I really enjoyed Kreed and Aaron's story though, and I thought it was a really great ending to the series.

Former Navy SEAL and current Deputy Marshal, Kreed Sinacola lives his life with honor and integrity. He doesn't mix his pleasure with business and has never been tempted to until he comes face to face with the computer hacker they have brought in to help solve his on-going case. More determined than ever to solve the case and get answers for his friend, Kreed is in a hurry to get things resolved quickly. But his attraction and connection to Aaron Stuart continues to grow the more time they spend together. Soon Kreed and Aaron are unable to fight what is between them, and both find themselves wanting more after the case is over. Kreed knows that Aaron is keeping something from him though and Aaron knows that revealing the truth will change everything. Can they possibly have a future with so many obstacles threatening to end them before they even start?

I really liked Kreed and Aaron. It has been awhile since I read the previous books in the series, so these two didn't come back to me until I was a bit into the story. But I thought that Kindle did a great job of introducing these guys for readers who haven't read the previous books and a great job of refreshing our memories for those of us who had read but might not remember the details. Kreed was a lot of fun, and I loved his personality. He was able to dish it out with the best of them, and I loved that he was similar to Mitch in a lot of ways. Having been partners for so long, those two just fit one another. But it was seeing him with Aaron here that really made me love him. He was so protective of him, and while he wanted something and kept pushing in small ways it felt like he was doing exactly what Aaron needed. Aaron was a bit hard for me to understand at first. He was a bit temperamental and seemed to have mood swings from time to time. But the more that was revealed about his character, the more I felt like he was just a complex guy that had a lot beneath the surface. He was on the nerdy side in a totally adorable way, and yet when he got things going with Kreed he was hot and dirty and I loved it! The chemistry between these two was absolutely smoking, and I loved seeing the heat build.

Overall, I really liked these guys and I thought that their story was a great way to end this series. This book was a bit slow at times, especially at the beginning. I was interested to see what would happen though, and I am glad that I stuck with it. There were several times that Kreed referred to Aaron as "kid" and "church boy" and I found that a bit annoying as it went on for the entire story. I understood that part of that was just Kreed's personality and part was him trying to put some space between him and Aaron while they were working the case together. But it just felt overdone and I was over it by the end of the book, especially when other characters even made it a point to bring it up to Kreed. But I still really liked this book and it was great to see the characters from the previous books again. If you are looking for a sexy M/M story with some suspense, I highly recommend Full Domain and the rest of the Nice Guys series. Kindle Alexander is my go-to author for well written and sexy M/M stories, and with each book I read from Kindle I know that I am going to really like it. Kindle's stories never fail to deliver the emotions as well as the steam, and I honestly can't wait to see what they write next!
